Port of Santos dredging costs lower than expected

Port of Santos dredging costs have fallen 11.9% to R$325m, from the R$369m previously estimated. A smaller volume of sediment needs to be removed to maintain the channel depth than was originally calculated.
The dredging work to be carried out by the consortium, formed by Van Oord Maritime Operations and Boskalis do Brasil, has been postponed until August 7. Santos Port Authority (Codesp) raised the issue of contract renewal with MTPAC late last year. Dredging plans include increasing channel depth from the current 15m to between 15.4m and 15.7m, as well as increasing the depth of the berths which will vary between 7.6m and 15.7m.
The University of São Paulo estimates the need to remove a volume of 6.6m cubic metres per annum to maintain the current channel depth.
