The preliminary throughput results for March 2023 showed the Port of Santos is on an auspicious trend, with an unprecedented monthly throughput of 15.3 million tonnes. It was the best monthly performance in the history of the Port of Santos, up 1% from the previous record set in the same period in 2021 (15.2 million tonnes). The growth was primarily driven by shipments of approximately 11.7 million tonnes, a performance that exceeded 3% in the same month of the previous year.
Solid bulk cargo movement was one of the highlights, which a record of 8.9 million tonnes, an increase of around half a million compared to the previous best mark (recorded in March 2022).
The soybean harvest was decisive for the growth of shipments through the Port of Santos. Shipments of the oilseed reached, so far, 6.3 million tonnes, approximately 21% above March 2022.
“This cargo throughput shows that the Port of Santos continues on a path of increased efficiency and productivity, consolidating its vocation as the largest port complex in Latin America, maintaining job creation and economic development in the region and the country,” said Marcus Mingoni, interim CEO of Santos Port Authority (SPA).
The number of ships that berthed during the period was 484, 8% more than that registered in the same period of 2022.
For SPA’s Director of Operations, Marcelo Ribeiro, “the mark reflects the success of the company’s recent market strategy, which encompasses all steps forward towards the sustainable development of the port, with projects such as the new Internal Railroad of Porto de Santos (Fips), which will ensure an increase in cargo movement transported by rail, doubling the capacity for agricultural commodities and expanding the port’s presence globally.”
It should be noted that, as these data are preliminary, the final numbers may increase the record even further.
