Port of Santos sets record container throughput in Sept 2022

The container throughput at the Port of Santos in September grew by double-digits, reaching 486.3 thousand TEU, 20.7% above September 2021. The new monthly record is 6.5% higher than the previous highest historic mark (August/2022). Year-to-date, growth reached 4.9%, totaling 3.7 million TEU, the best result recorded in the first nine months of the year.
Total cargo throughput in the month totaled 13.6 million tonnes in the Port of Santos, 14.9% above the same period in 2021. This was the highest monthly mark recorded in the month of September. Such an increase raised total movement in the year to 123.7 million tonnes, a growth of 9.6% over the same period last year. The expectation is to beat the record set by last year’s total (147.0 million tonnes).
Exports in the month totaled 9.7 million tonnes, a growth of 24.0% over the shipments carried out in the same period of the previous year. This cargo flow reached 90.0 million tons in the year, an increase of 12.4% over the same period in 2021.
Imports totaled 3.8 million tonnes, down 2.8% from September last year. Landings of goods from abroad totaled 33.6 million tonnes in the year, 2.8% above the figure from January to September of the previous year.
Solid bulk movement reached 6.3 million tons, up 17.3% from the same month last year. Highlights of this cargo segment included shipments of corn, with 2.1 million tons (+83.7%), soybean meal, with 742.7 thousand tons (+44.2%), and soybeans, with 586.0 thousand tons (+91.3%). Soybeans in grain totaled 24.3 million tons in the year, up 11.0%; soybean meal was 6.9 million tons, up 33.2%; and corn was 8.5 million tons, up 79.4%.
Fertilizer arrivals totaled 635.3 thousand tons in the month, a reduction of 27.1%, while it presented a growth of 6.7%, totaling 6.1 million tons YTD.
In terms of volume, liquid bulk operations decreased by 0.9% to 1.6 million tonnes in September. However, the year-to-date figures show an increase of 3.2% for the year, reaching 14.2 million tonnes, thanks to the strong performance of fuel oil (+18.9%), gasoline (+6.6%), alcohol (+4.9%), citrus juices (+13.5%), caustic soda (+8.0%), and diesel operations (+23.9%).
Operations with loose general cargo reached 696 thousand tonnes in September, up 37.3%, mainly due to pulp shipments (+29.6%). Year-to-date, loose cargo movements added up to 7.3 million tonnes, a growth of 49.0%, the best mark for the period, especially in terms of pulp (+43.7%), iron and steel (+8.6%) and vehicles (+3.3%).
The number of vessel calls in the year reached 3,899, 6.9% above the previous year (3,646).
Trade flow
The participation of the Port of Santos in the Brazilian trade flow was 28.9% (US$ 132.8 billion – FOB). About 30.5% of the international transactions that involved the port had China as a partner country US$ 40.58 billion – FOB). São Paulo is the state with the highest participation (53.8%) in foreign trade transactions through the Port of Santos, reaching US$ 71.54 billion (FOB).
