The northern region of Santa Catarina stands as the primary destination for steel shipments arriving at the Port of São Francisco do Sul.
From January to May, a substantial amount of 1.4 million tonnes of steel coils, bars, and plates were unloaded off vessels docked at the port, a notable growth of 9% compared to the previous year’s figure of 1.3 million tonnes.
Prominent steel processing enterprises like ArcelorMittal Vega play a crucial role in receiving and transforming steel into parts utilized across various sectors, including the automotive industry, civil construction, and the manufacturing of refrigerators and stoves.
Of all the steel received by Arcelor through the Port of São Francisco do Sul this year, which amounts to 885 thousand tonnes, factories in Santa Catarina received the largest share. Specifically, companies within the state received 350 thousand tonnes (40%).
The remaining steel processed by the multinational corporation was predominantly distributed to neighboring states such as Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná, as well as regions in Southeast Brazil. The port also serves as a crucial entry point for steel coming from other locations, particularly from China and Espírito Santo domestically.
Cleverton Vieira, the port president, highlights the significance of the cities within a 100-kilometer radius of the Port of São Francisco. These areas concentrate 50% of the industrial GDP of both Santa Catarina and Paraná. This crucial geographical advantage positions the port as a key supplier of raw materials to fuel the metalworking industry in the northern region of Santa Catarina.
