Port of São Francisco do Sul – Trains account for 50% of the grain load

The railroad plays an essential role in the flow of grain production to the Port of São Francisco do Sul. Every year, around 700 trains arrive at the port complex, loaded mainly with soy and corn.
These trains transport more than 3 million tons, half of the port’s cereal exports every year. The rest arrive by truck.

Most of the grains come from Santa Catarina, Paraná, and Mato Grosso do Sul and reach the Port through the railway corridor that connects Mafra, in the North Plateau of SC, to the Port of São Francisco, over 170 km away.
The transshipment and distribution of railway wagons to São Francisco are carried out in Corupá, 80 kilometers from the port complex. Since the trains travel at just 25-30 kilometers per hour, this route takes about 2.5 hours.
Thousands of railway wagons
On average, each Rumo company train is made up of 80 railway wagons which transport around 50 tons each. Thus, every year, approximately 57,000 wagons are unloaded at three locations in the port complex: at the grain terminal, managed by the Porto, and at two more private terminals, Terlogs and Bunge.
From there, the grains follow a long aerial conveyor belt until reaching the cargo ships that are heading mainly to Asia.
