Throughout 2023, 38 ships have departed from São Francisco do Sul bound for overseas, carrying 2.5 million tonnes of corn, primarily to China.
The number represents a 200% increase compared to the same period in 2022, when 839,000 tonnes of grain were exported.
According to the latest report from the port authority, released earlier this week, 806,000 tonnes of corn were shipped abroad in September alone, nearly reaching the total exported in 2022 (839,000 tonnes) in just one month.
Exports have tripled in one year, going from 806,000 tonnes to 2.5 million tonnes, thanks to Brazil’s bumper corn crop, expected to reach 126 million tonnes in the 2022/23 harvest.
The chart below displays the volume of corn exported from São Francisco do Sul Port between Jan 2020 and Sep 2023. The data is from DataLiner.

International Certification
The record-breaking exports from São Francisco were boosted by the sanitary certification granted by China to the port in May.
The certification attests that the Grain Terminal complies with all the sanitary requirements and quality standards demanded by the Asian country.
The certification, granted by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture in partnership with the Chinese General Administration of Customs, also ensures compliance with requirements such as quarantine, transportation, storage, and proper corn processing.
Exports Represent 60%
The total cargo throughput in September at the Port of São Francisco reached 1.6 million tonnes, a 33% increase compared to last year.
Exports accounted for 60% of all cargo, totaling 964,500 tonnes, driven by corn, soy, and vegetable oil. Imports stood at 647,500 tonnes (40%), primarily consisting of steel coils and fertilizers.
Annual Increase of 26%
The movement of goods in the first nine months of 2023 reached 12.4 million tonnes, representing a 26.5% increase compared to the same period in 2022. There were 7.5 million tonnes of exports and 4.9 million tonnes of imports.
“From January to September, we’ve shipped the same amount of goods as in the entire previous year: 12.6 million tonnes,” celebrates the President of the Port, Cleverton Vieira.
“The improvements in the port’s infrastructure, thanks to the unwavering support of Governor Jorginho Mello, were crucial in achieving this number,” Vieira adds, anticipating a historical cargo movement record by the end of the year, expected to surpass 15 million tonnes.
