Port of São Francisco: exports exceed imports for the 1st time since 2021

In the first ten months of 2023, the Port of São Francisco do Sul recorded a throughput of 13.8 million tonnes of goods, a 27% increase compared to the same period last year (10.8 million).
Exports reached 8.4 million tonnes, representing 61% of the cargo, while imports reached 5.4 million tonnes (39%).
In the same period of 2022, imports, boasting 5.6 million tonnes (52%), surpassed exports, with 5.1 million tons (48%).
However, in 2023, driven by the shipment of grains to China, the port located in northern Santa Catarina managed to reverse the trend, and exports increased by 64% compared to the previous year.
The data, released this week by the port authority, indicate that it is the first time in two years that exports have surpassed imports; the last time it happened was 2021.
For the port president, Cleverton Vieira, the increase in grain exports is directly related to the productive capacity of the agricultural sector in Santa Catarina and Brazil, which has been enjoying high productivity, leading to economic and social gains for the entire production and logistics chain.
“To adequately meet this growth and facilitate the outflow of national production, the Port of São Francisco is constantly investing in the maintenance of equipment used for cargo loading, as well as improving its terrestrial and water infrastructure of the facility,” says President Cleverton Vieira.
“This year’s performance shows that the Port of São Francisco do Sul has been seizing market opportunities, even with the challenging weather conditions, seeking efficient solutions, which are reflected in the numbers and positive performance throughout the year,” evaluates the acting secretary of the Secretariat of Ports, Airports, and Railways (SPAF), Robison Coelho.

Growth of 36%
In October, despite the constant rain affecting port activities, 1.36 million tonnes of goods passed through the Port of São Francisco, representing an increase of 36% compared to the same month in 2022 (1 million tonnes).
Exports totaled 856,000 tonnes (63%), mainly due to corn (635,000 tonnes) and soybeans (202,000 tonnes).
Imports of products reached 511,000 tonnes (37%). Highlights include steel products (320,000 tonnes) and fertilizers (177,000 tonnes).
