The Port of São Sebastião closed in 2024 with a historic cargo-handling record. The terminal handled a total of 1.5 million tons, marking a 47% growth compared to the 1 million tons recorded in 2023, according to data released by the state government on Tuesday (21).
Key Cargoes Handled
The most handled cargo in 2024 was bulk sugar, totaling 498.5 thousand tons, followed by soda ash (a raw material for glass production), with 411.4 thousand tons. Petroleum coke ranked third, with 234.3 thousand tons, while malt and barley took the fourth spot, totaling 167 thousand tons.
Impacts and Initiatives
According to São Paulo’s Secretariat for the Environment, Infrastructure, and Logistics (Semil), which manages the port, these positive results were driven by expanding storage areas at the terminal. Another significant factor was the port’s adherence to the Brazilian Alliance for Port Decarbonization, which promotes sustainable practices. As part of this commitment, the port began offering discounts on port fees for vessels demonstrating energy efficiency and low greenhouse gas emissions.
Auction in 2025
The Port of São Sebastião will be privatized in 2025 as part of the Federal Government’s plan to auction 58 port terminals, with an estimated R$20 billion in investments.
Scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025, the auction includes an investment of R$ 656 million for the modernization and expansion of the port’s infrastructure. The winning company will be granted the right to operate an area of 261,000 m² for 35 years, renewable for the same duration.
The plan envisions increasing the port’s capacity to handle at least 4.3 million tons annually and constructing new ship berthing infrastructure and a new pier. Since 2007, the São Paulo government has managed the terminal through Semil, which is conducting a public consultation to attract investors interested in modernization projects.
The state government believes these improvements will strategically position the Port of São Sebastião to meet the growing demand for cargo transportation and consolidate it as one of Brazil’s key logistics hubs.
