The Port of Suape recorded its highest cargo movement in a single month in August, marking a significant milestone since operations began 45 years ago. A total of 2,658,036 tonnes were handled, driven primarily by liquid bulk (oil and gasoline), with a 41% year-on-year growth compared to the same period in 2023. Previously, October 2022 held the record with 2,534,528 tonnes. Cumulatively, the port handled 17,150,473 tonnes in 2024, representing a 7.3% increase from 2023.
Liquid cargo remains Suape’s mainstay, accounting for 65.5% of all cargo handled at the terminal. This category includes oil and its derivatives, such as fuels, LPG, and crude oil. This group reached 1,716,490 tonnes in August, the highest volume of the year and a 37% increase from August 2023. The container movement, in which Suape is a leader in the Northeast, reached 667,415 tonnes and 59,571 TEUs. Both measures saw a 31% increase for the month.
The cargo with the highest percentage growth was solid bulk, primarily consisting of wheat and petroleum coke, which surged by 172% to a total of 208,549 tonnes. General cargo also increased significantly, rising from 38,722 tonnes in August 2023 to 65,583 tonnes last month, a growth of 69%. This includes vehicles, bagged sugar, steel plates and coils, wind industry equipment, machines, and electrical materials. Imports in August totaled 765,557 tonnes, reflecting a 94% increase, while exports reached 120,106 tonnes, up 79%. Cabotage services saw a 25% rise, totaling 1,772,374 tonnes. The number of dockings reached 162.
“We celebrate another positive result where Suape demonstrates its strength and potential for growth. We are Brazil’s sixth largest public port in terms of cargo movement, strategically connected to the world’s major port complexes,” commented Rinaldo Lira, Director of Development and Port Management.
