Port of Suape demarcates new anchorage areas

The Port of Suape has demarcated a new anchorage area – a location offshore where ships can “park” to await authorization to dock in one of the port’s 13 berths. The new demarcation delimits three areas: two for anchoring and one for quarantine, all of which are distant from fishing areas and can support up to 54 vessels at the same time. In addition to meeting the demand of the Maritime Authority, the changes also take into account requests from local fishermen, and were carried out in conjunction with the Pilotage association, Pernambuco Port Captaincy and fishermen, and approved by the Brazilian Navy. The changes are already in place.
From 2012 to 2019, the Port of Suape recorded an average of nine vessels at anchor per day. The number of vessel calls itself reached 1,402. As the anchorages are within the Organized Port region, its proper use is supervised by the Port Authority, which may impose sanctions in the case of non-compliance.
With this development, the first and largest of the three areas is Anchorage 1, with an area of 1,172 hectares and able to accommodate ships up to 14.5 meters maximum draft. The second area, Anchorage 2, covers 583 hectares and is intended for vessels with maximum draft between 14.5 meters and 17.3 meters. The third area has 78 hectares and reserved for quarantined ships.
