Port of Suape partners with Embratel to test private 5G network for cargo tracking

The Suape Industrial Port Complex, located in the metropolitan region of Recife, has installed a private standalone 5G 3.5GHz band network as a proof of concept (PoC). The project was implemented with Embratel and the National Secretariat of Ports and Waterway Transportation, with mobile internet from Claro.
Fifth-generation connectivity was employed for the use of intelligent cameras integrated with a video analytics solution to automate logistical processes for identifying and monitoring vehicle entry and exit at the dock. As a result, the initiative minimized the time and manual effort used to verify the flow of car cargo in the yard.
The port-industry’s vehicle hub has three public yards for the storage of cars, with an annual movement capacity of 250,000 vehicles. During the proof of concept, the connected cameras read the cars’ tags, collecting the chassis number through artificial intelligence (AI). The data was automatically recorded on a platform that stored the arrival time in the yard, the parking spot, and when it was removed from the location.
The project involved the participation of different companies. Atos provided the video analytics solution, and Nokia provided and implemented the 5G SA infrastructure, including gNodeB radio, the cloud-native 5G SA core, and its orchestrator. Amazon Web Services (AWS) provided cloud services, and Arsitec and Spirent were responsible for device authentication.
Innovation
In 2019, the Port of Suape created the Innovation Program for the digital transformation of the complex, which includes this initiative. New possibilities with the use of 5G, AI, machine learning, among other technologies, are being analyzed after the completion of this PoC.
