Port of Suape to restart dredging with BRL 480 million invested

The government of the state of Pernambuco announced last Friday (Nov 4) that the dredging of the Port of Suape will be restarted. The intervention, paralyzed since 2013, will have an investment of R$ 480 million, of which R$ 340 million will be used to pay off debts, plus R$ 140 million to complete the work. Dredging should begin this November.
The work, expected to take 4 to 5 months to be completed, will be carried out using a dredger to remove sediments and rocks, allowing the port to be leveled at a depth of 20 meters. Despite the contract’s suspension, 85% of the dredging work has already been completed.
“The main port in Brazil is Santos, which is 15.8 meters deep. However, the conclusion of the port dredging means that large corporations needing larger cargo ships will have an option in Suape. We are close to reaching the same depth as the Port of Maranhão, the greatest in Northeast Brazil. Still, our location is critical to remaining competitive and attracting other large enterprises,” said Roberto Gusmão, CEO of the Suape Industrial Port Complex.
Please see below for a comparison in terms of TEUs of the five most imported products that arrived at the Port of Suape in 2021 (Jan-Dec) versus 2022 (Jan-Set). With the increase in depth of the port and the arrival of larger vessels, cargo flow at the port is on track to increase further.

According to Governor Paulo Câmara, the work will be a watershed moment for the market. “This work’s conclusion was a liability that needed to be resolved as soon as possible. As a result, Suape will reach a new depth to make a difference in the refinery and iron ore markets, ensuring the smooth operation of Maersk’s new terminal. Given all of the major economic events of the previous year, this is a significant accomplishment, ” he argued.

Please don´t forget Pecém, where the max Draft is 15,3 which is 15.6 meters deep, naturally, no dredging needed.
