The Port of Vitória is exporting a new type of cargo, spodumene, a lithium-rich mineral highly relevant for the cell phone, notebook, and tablet battery industry, in addition to being highly demanded to manufacture electric or hybrid cars. With a volume of approximately 34 thousand tonnes (solid bulk), the product was shipped from berth 202 in Capuaba, Vila Velha, on the vessel Spar Pyxis. Destination: China.
“This is a test, a pilot project that can lead to a continuous route. Spodumene is a new export product for the Port of Vitória,” highlights Wagner Cantarela, commercial manager at Multilift Logística, the port operator responsible for the storage and stowage of cargo loads coming from Minas Gerais. The freight forwarder was the company Orion Rodos.
The exporter is AMG Brazil. With operations in the country since 1945, the company owns the Volta Grande mine, located in Nazareno, and a manufacturing unit in São João del Rei, both in the state of Minas Gerais.
The Director of Planning and Development (Dirpad) at CODESA, Raquel Guimarães, considered the pilot test very promising and underlined that the company’s integration is necessary to make the project viable. “Our commercial and environmental departments, in collaboration with the port operator, actively participated in the development of this project and making arrangements with consenting agencies,” she mentions.
