Port Performance Summit discusses port sector innovation in São Paulo

The Port Performance Summit Brazil 2024 kicked off this Wednesday, October 2, focusing on innovation, technology, automation, and the digitalization of ports and terminals. Organized by DDLM (Double Down Live Marketing), the event features Datamar as the official data provider and DatamarNews as a media partner.

Port Competitiveness: Elements of Competitive Differentiation in the Port Sector and Its Value Chain” was the theme of the first presentation, delivered by Casemiro Tércio, a naval engineer and partner at 4Infra. Key topics discussed in Tércio’s presentation included Competitive Environments in the Port Sector, Competitiveness and Differentiation Factors, Performance-Oriented Innovation and Technology, and Integration and Verticalization of the Value Chain.

“All market movements occur because someone isn’t delivering good service. For instance, the coffee industry opted to ship coffee under the break bulk modality via the Port of São Sebastião,” said Tércio.

The “Manifesto for Innovation in the Maritime and Port Sector” was the topic of a panel led by Wilson Sons and Açu Port. Organized alongside Hidrovias do Brasil, the manifesto aims to channel innovation within the maritime and port industry.

Optimizing Waterway Management for Ports and Terminals” was presented by DockTech’s CEO, Uri Yoselevich, who joined the event remotely. Yoselevich showcased advanced technologies for more effective decision support systems, discussing vessel draft optimization, on-demand dredging, risk mitigation, and data infrastructure for autonomous vessels.

Automatic Density Measurement for Draught Survey and the TS Port Pilot Project” was the focus of a presentation by Luiz Fernando Furlan, operations and innovation coordinator at HidroMares. He discussed real-time density data collection to optimize ship draught surveys with reliable data using an easy-to-install, fully independent device.

The final panel of the morning addressed the Port Community System (PCS), highlighting the key challenges and perspectives of the project. Angelino Caputo, Executive Director of ABTRA; Tetsu Koike, Director of Sectorial Policies, Planning, and Innovation at the Executive Secretariat of the Ministry of Ports and Airports; Roberto Paveck, economist and port specialist; and Milena Castro, ABTRA’s Communications and Institutional Relations Manager discussed the importance and benefits of PCS for the port community, the Brazilian project strategy, and the initial steps for implementation.

After lunch, the first topic was “Paperless Port,” presented by Carlos Tiego Arruda, Coordinator of Port Technologies at the Ministry of Ports and Airports. He highlighted the main advantages of the system, including reducing costs for port operators, maximizing berth usage, system integrations, and implementing AI in processes.

Next, Filipe Guimarães from Cubo Maritime & Port delivered a panel on innovation.

Gabriel Meteucci Cassia, R&D and Innovation Manager at the Port of Itaqui addressed internal innovation challenges in a public company during his talk on “Innovation with Talent Development.”

Ricardo Pupo Larguesa, co-founder of T25, then discussed “Transforming Ports with Artificial Intelligence,” presenting a case study and showcasing recent sector developments.

Another presentation on innovation, “Innovation Ecosystems in Ports,” featured a case study from Cais Açu Lab, delivered by Juliane Castro Carneiro, Innovation Coordinator at Porto do Açu.

Adriana Regina Martin, Director of Innovation and Digital Transformation at Suape Industrial Port Complex, presented cases on “Innovation and Digital Transformation at the Port of Suape.”

The talk titled “Role of Startups and Collaborative Ecosystems in the Development of the Maritime and Port Sector” was presented by Eduardo Valença, Digital Transformation Director at Wilson Sons, and Cláudia Borges, Executive Director of ABTP.

The first day of the event concluded with a panel on “Challenges of Digital Transformation in the Port Sector: How Enabling Technologies Can Contribute to This Process.”

The event continues on Thursday, October 3.
