Port sector cargo handling up 9.7% in the four-month period

Between January and April, the port sector handled 380.5 million tons of cargo. This corresponds to an increase of 9.73% compared to the same period last year. The numbers are from ANTAQ’s Waterway Statistical Panel. In April 2021 alone, the Brazilian port sector handled 100.5 million tons, which meant an increase of 6.2% compared to the same month last year.
In the first four months of the year, private ports handled 249.7 million tons, up 9.94% compared to the first four months of 2020. Public ports handled 130.8 million tons, registering an improvement of 9 .33%.
“The numbers are still positive, and the trend is that port activity will maintain on an upward curve throughout the year. The Brazilian port sector has proven to be resilient, even able to overcome a pandemic”, said ANTAQ’s CEO, Eduardo Nery, stressing that ANTAQ will continue working to provide the sector with more infrastructure and to attract investments.

Port Facilities
Santos (SP) was the public port that moved the most: 38.1 million tons in the first four months of 2021, an increase of 7.75% compared to the same period in 2020. Santos was followed by Paranaguá (PR): 16 .5 million tons (an increase of 0.35%), and Itaguaí (RJ): 15.9 million tons and an increase of 34.7%.
Regarding private terminals, Ponta da Madeira (MA) handled 54.4 million tons in the first four months of the year: an increase of 5%. In second place was the Angra dos Reis (RJ) Waterway Terminal: 22.7 million tons handled and growth of 8.52%. Then came the São Sebastião Waterway Terminal (Almirante Barroso), in São Paulo. The installation handled 18.1 million tons, an increase of 3.6%.
The busiest cargoes in this first four months were ores (+ 11.7%), mineral fuels (+ 15.87%), and seeds and oleaginous fruits (- 3.38%)
Containers
Container handling in TEU in the first four months of 2021 was 3.7 million, an increase of 10.54% compared to the same period in 2020.
Cabotage
The movement via cabotage was 94.3 million tons in the first four months of the year, a 12% growth. The busiest cargo was liquid and gaseous bulk. Long-haul shipping transported 262.6 million tons between January and April 2021 (a 9.95% increase). Solid bulk was the most transported cargo in this type of navigation.
