Port sector handles 477.8 million tonnes between Jan and May in Brazil

In the first five months of 2022, the port sector in Brazil handled 477.8 million tonnes. Inland navigation was the highlight in the period, accounting for the handling of 33.7 million tonnes, an increase of 5.54% compared to the same period of the previous year. The data from ANTAQ are available on the Waterway Statistical Panel, updated on July 8th.

Among the main goods transported on the country’s waterways are fertilizers (+94.5%), corn (+84%), oil and derivatives, not including crudes (+37.7%), and iron ore (+13.5 %).

In addition to inland navigation, container cabotage grew by 3.1% between January and May this year, transporting 1.5 million TEUs. In May alone, container cabotage rose 19.8% compared to the same month in 2021.

Port Facilities

The private port facility that handled the most cargo was the Ponta da Madeira Maritime Terminal (MA), with 59.8 million tonnes. However, the Tubarão terminals (ES) and the São Sebastião Waterway Terminal (SP) were the only ones that grew from January to May – 13.8% and 7%, respectively. Among the public ports, Santos (SP) handled 51.8 million tonnes, with accumulated growth of 5.9% from January to May.

According to the statistics, public ports 168 million tonnes; and private terminals, 309.7 million tonnes.

LCL and fertilizers 

Loose cargo load (LCL)-type cargo increased in volume from January to May, accumulating growth of 19.5% in the period. Currently, these products represent 6% of the total handled in the national territory, with solid bulk responsible for 57.2%, liquid bulk (25.8%), and containerized cargo (11%).

In transported goods, fertilizers increased by 19.7%. The public ports of Paranaguá and Antonina (PR), Santos, São Francisco do Sul (SC), Rio Grande (RS), Itaqui (MA), and Santarém (PA) were the main ports where these inputs entered the country.

Oil and derivatives (without crude oil) also registered a rise of 1.9%, and iron and steel (1.4%). Iron ore was the cargo most handled in the country. Between January and May, there were 130.8 million tonnes. Then come oil and derivatives, crude oil (76.4 million); soybeans (60.4 million); and containers (52.5 million).
