The ports of Vila Velha are playing an increasingly larger role in the export economy of Espírito Santo state. Blessed from a geographical standpoint, the city recorded an impressive $609 million (approximately R$3.2 billion) in operations from its port activities in 2023.
According to the Preliminary Trade Balance released by the Jones dos Santos Neves Institute (IJSN), Espírito Santo exported $9.5 billion last year, marking a growth of 4.17% compared to 2022. Imports also increased, with business volume reaching $9.8 billion, representing a 3.34% rise compared to 2022.
Strategic Partnership
The improved competitiveness of the ports of Vila Velha motivated a strategic partnership between the Municipal Government, VPorts (formerly Codesa), and the Government of Espírito Santo. Following a detailed analysis of the city’s port sector, an action plan was developed to leverage the potential of the port complex through which approximately 94% of all cargo movement in the state is handled.
Consulting firm Garín Infraestrutura’s report emphasized the necessity for ongoing investment in railway operations to improve access to Vila Velha’s port. It also stresses the importance of improving road access to the Capuaba terminal, lateral road setback works to eliminate bottlenecks at the access road to the city’s port complex, attaining a 12.5m depth draft in the maritime canal (to accommodate ships with larger cargo capacity), improvements to BR-101 road conditions, and structural work on the Aribiri River bridge.
