The ports of Santa Catarina had a sound performance in cargo throughput during the first quarter of 2024, surpassing the figures from the same period last year. According to data compiled by the Ports Management under the Secretariat of Ports, Airports, and Railways (SPAF), the ports in Santa Catarina handled a total of 15.2 million tonnes of cargo, marking a notable 6.6% increase compared to the first quarter of 2023. This growth outpaced the national average, which stood at 5.2%.
The National Waterborne Transport Agency (Antaq) released this information on May 9th. In terms of container throughput, Santa Catarina’s ports processed 6.4 million tonnes, marking a 3.8% growth compared to the same period last year. Notably, the state accounted for 19.17% of the total national container movement.
Portonave led the way with 305.2 thousand TEUs, followed closely by Itapoá with 269.5 thousand TEUs and Imbituba with 16.7 thousand TEUs. These results solidify Santa Catarina’s position as the second-largest state in Brazil in terms of container throughput.
The chart below shows the Itapoá Port’s container exports, measured in Twenty-foot Equivalent Units, between Jan 2021 and Mar 2024. The data is from DataLiner.

Breaking down the overall port performance, São Francisco do Sul handled 4.5 million tonnes, followed by Portonave with 3.12 million tonnes, and Itapoá with 3.11 million tonnes. The SFS Waterway Terminal, which handles Petrobrás fuel, processed 2.2 million tonnes, while Imbituba handled the same amount. Other terminals reported performances below 75 thousand tonnes.
Beto Martins, Secretary of SPAF, commented on the positive results, stating, “The data presented by the ports of Santa Catarina is satisfactory. This underscores the sector’s significance for the state’s economy and validates Governor Jorginho Mello’s decision to establish the Secretariat of Ports, Airports, and Railways.”
