Brazilian ports handled 375.7 million tonnes in the first four months of 2022. Private terminals were responsible for handling 244 million tonnes, while the port throughput of public harbors in Brazil reached 131.7 million tonnes. These figures were disclosed by Antaq in its Estatístico Aquaviário.
Among public port highlights in Brazil, we find the Port of Santos (SP), with a throughput of 40.5 million tonnes (+6.2%), and the Port of Paranaguá, with 16.6 million tons (+ 0.8%). On the other hand, the private terminals which grew the most in the period were: the Waterway Terminal of Madre de Deus (BA), which handled 6.4 million tonnes (+32.3%); followed by the Tubarão Terminal, which registered 18.4 million tonnes (+12.1%) and the São Sebastião Waterway Terminal (SP), with 19.4 million tonnes handled (7.2%).

Inland navigation stood out among navigation approaches.
Between January and April, 26.6 million tonnes were handled, representing a 7.15% increase over the same period the previous year. Considering all the cargo transported via waterways in Brazil, the transport of liquid and gaseous bulk (+29.2%) and general cargo were the cargo types that showed the largest volume increases.
As for goods, the flow of oil and by-products (disregarding crudes) increased by 1.1% (27.4 million tonnes); fertilizers registered an increase of 22.8% (12.1 million tonnes); iron and steel showed a positive variation of 3.7% (8.1 million tonnes) in the first four months compared to the same period in 2021.
The numbers also show robust growth in general loose cargo throughput in the year: 23.9 million tonnes were handled (+26.9%)
