A unit of Portos RS, the port of Porto Alegre, in the southernmost state of Brazil, achieved its best-ever February figure by handling 107,274 tonnes of cargo. This increase also made it the best first two months of the year in history, with a total of 175,227 tonnes recorded in the first two months of 2024, marking an 81.02% growth compared to the same period in 2022.
During the initial 60 days of 2024, the port saw 43 vessels arrive, including river barges and long-haul ships. Wheat cargoes led the charge with 89,811 tonnes, followed by fertilizers (45,996 tonnes), beef tallow (20,879 tonnes), barley (17,291 tonnes), and general cargo (1,250 tonnes).
Brazil tops the list of countries of origin for goods unloaded at Porto Alegre during the first two months, accounting for 89,721 tonnes, equivalent to some 58.64% of the total. Legging behind Brazil are Russia (38,936 tonnes), Argentina (12,530 tonnes), Germany (7,060 tonnes), and Uruguay (4,761 tonnes).
Exports-wise, the United States served as the port’s top cargo destination (21,559 tonnes), followed by the domestic market (570 tonnes). In February, Portos RS announced plans to renovate the operational area’s pavement still in 2024, aiming to enhance operational efficiency and safety.
Commenting on the unit’s results, Portos RS Planning and Development Manager, Fernando Estima, commended the new lease area tenders, the recovery of navigational signaling along the waterway, and operational licenses obtained from Fepam, which pave the way for an even brighter future for the Porto Alegre port.
“February’s results are a clear indication of how companies continue to invest in the Porto Alegre port and how Portos RS remains firmly committed to the waterway and the commercial quay of Porto Alegre,” said Estima.
