This July, the Port of Salvador Container Terminal (Tecon-Salvador) achieved its highest-ever container throughput in its 24-year history, handling 43,750 TEUs. This surpasses the previous record of 43,431 TEUs set in March of this year.
July’s volume also significantly increased, rising more than 28% compared to the same month last year. Year-to-date figures from January to July show a 22% growth in overall operations, including both foreign trade (imports and exports) and domestic trade (coastal shipping), reaching 266,664 TEUs compared to 218,610 TEUs in 2023.
Take a look at the chart below and compare container exports and imports recorded at the Port of Salvador terminal between January 2021 and June 2024. The information was derived from Datamar’s maritime intelligence hub DataLiner.

One of the standout factors in the first seven months of 2024 was the surge in cotton exports from the Matopiba region, which spans Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia. This agricultural commodity saw an extraordinary 2,682% increase in exports between May and July compared to the same period last year.
“The numbers highlight the prominent position of the Salvador terminal in the market, offering 4.0 logistics that streamline all necessary procedures for loading and unloading, as well as high-quality infrastructure, with a quay and yard equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and trained teams that ensure greater productivity and total safety,” explained Demir Lourenço, Executive Director of Tecon Salvador, a business unit of Wilson Sons.
The terminal’s capabilities have kept Bahia attractive for new shipping routes. In July, Tecon Salvador launched a direct route to Asia with weekly departures, further enhancing the potential for increased exports of Bahia’s cotton via Salvador.
