Even with reduced manpower, due to the pandemic caused by the coronavirus, Porto do Açu broke the record for iron ore movement this March. A total of 2.4 million tons were exported by Ferroport (a partnership between Prumo Logística and Anglo American), a volume loaded on 16 vessels. This is the largest amount of ore ever handled by the company in a month, since the start of activities in 2014.
“This is the result of teamwork, effort and maximum dedication from each of our employees. Many of them quickly adapted to a different routine of working from home and others continue to go out in the field so that our operations can continue and so that we can guarantee that our economy continues to work. This shows that we are on the right track, in times of preventing and fighting COVID-19”, says Carsten Bosselmann, CEO of Ferroport.
The first company to set up at Porto do Açu, Ferroport has already exported 73.8 million tons of iron ore since its inauguration. The product is sourced from Anglo American, which arrives at the port via the largest pipeline in the world at 529 km in length, and crossing 33 municipalities, starting in Conceição do Mato Dentro (MG). At 20.5 meters deep, the iron ore terminal can receive Panamax and Capesize vessels with capacities of 220,000 tons.
