Porto do Açu Operações, a Prumo Group company responsible for managing the Açu port complex in northern Rio de Janeiro state, has been awarded the I-REC (International Renewable Energy Certificate), guaranteeing the use of 100% clean energy in its operating chain.
The I-REC certification, obtained through Comerc Energia, verifies that Porto do Açu Operações used 1,711 MWh of clean energy in 2023 across its port and administrative facilities and the Caruara Reserve.
“The I-REC certificate is another important milestone in our ESG journey, validating our commitment to sustainable business development. In 2023, we reduced the carbon and water footprints of our operations and received the international Ecoports seal for the second time, the sector’s main certification, recognizing our adherence to the best environmental, social, and governance practices,” emphasized Vinicius Patel, Director of Port Administration at Porto do Açu Operações.
The I-REC is an audited and secure certification that complies with the GHG Protocol methodology, aligning with the most widely used international standards for quantifying greenhouse gas emissions. To maintain high environmental performance comparable to leading ports worldwide, Porto do Açu Operações has already secured the volume of renewable energy required for its activities in 2024 and 2025.
