To reaffirm its commitment to global best practices in sustainability, Porto do Itaqui participated in key international discussions on energy transition and decarbonization. The mission, held in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain from February 17 to 27, brought together experts and port executives from Brazil and abroad.
In Belgium, Porto do Itaqui representatives visited the Port of Antwerp, where they attended presentations on multifunctional fuels, emerging low-emission technologies, and climate transition projects. The visit was part of the International Program on Energy Transition and Port Decarbonization, which also included stops at innovation hubs such as BlueChem, specializing in sustainable chemistry, and The Beacon, home to startups focused on digitalization and decarbonization.
From Belgium, the International Energy Transition Program moved on to Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe. In the Netherlands, the Porto do Itaqui team showcased its Decarbonization Plan, detailing initiatives aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and modernizing port operations. The presentation was part of a panel featuring Brazilian case studies, where key ports from Brazil shared insights and challenges in their transition toward a low-carbon economy.
In Spain, Porto do Itaqui participated in the “International Certification in Energy Transition and Port Decarbonization”, held in Valencia and Puertollano. The program featured technical visits, including a tour of Puertollano’s Hydrogen Plant, as well as discussions on decarbonization strategies adopted by European ports. As a founding member of the Brazilian Alliance for Port Decarbonization (ABDP), Porto do Itaqui highlighted its initiative to accelerate the energy transition in Brazil’s port sector.
“During these sessions, we presented our detailed diagnostics, ambitious targets, and strategic roadmap for decarbonization, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability and energy transition,” said Luane Lemos, Porto do Itaqui’s environmental manager.
“Innovation has been a key pillar in transforming our operations—driving efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and preparing us for future challenges,” she added.
The international agenda further cemented Porto do Itaqui’s role—alongside other Brazilian ports—as a facilitator of sustainable solutions in the industry.
“Brazilian ports play an undeniable role in our country’s development,” emphasized Hibernon Marinho, Porto do Itaqui’s operations director.
“Engaging in events like these fosters strategic partnerships with other ports, research institutions, and innovative companies worldwide,” he stated.
Bruno Mota, Porto do Itaqui’s planning director, also attended the meetings and underscored the importance of global collaboration.
“Presenting our decarbonization plan on this platform opened new doors for cooperation with European entities and provided valuable insights that we can apply in our local context,” Mota concluded.
The international mission included representatives from Brazil’s leading ports, as well as officials from the National Waterway Transport Agency (ANTAQ) and the Ministry of Ports and Airports.
