Brazil’s Federal Government has awarded Porto Itapoá the Portos + Brasil Prize. The terminal secured second place in the container throughput growth category, marking the highest growth rate among private terminals in the country, with a 20% increase compared to the previous year. Last year, Porto Itapoá surpassed 1 million TEUs for the first time in its history, representing a 14% increase over 2022.

The award ceremony took place in Brasília on August 6. Cássio Schreiner, President of Porto Itapoá, highlighted the investments made to expand the terminal’s infrastructure. “Last year, we introduced new equipment and technologies and completed Phase III of our yard, which now spans 455,000 square meters and includes a new 8,000 square meter warehouse,” he said.

Schreiner also praised the success of the Babitonga Bay Port Complex at the awards. “The ports of Babitonga demonstrated their importance and excellence,” he stated. The Port of São Francisco do Sul won in the categories of bulk solid cargo growth and total growth among public ports. Additionally, the Aquaviário Terminal of São Francisco do Sul was recognized in the liquid bulk category.

Record Semester

Porto Itapoá closed the first half of 2024 with its best-ever performance, including its best month. In total, 597,338 TEUs were handled in the first semester of 2024, a 12% increase from the 533,423 TEUs recorded in the same period of 2023.

In June 2024, the terminal handled 109,889 TEUs, marking the highest monthly throughput in its history, surpassing April’s record of 107,475 TEUs.

Marketing Campaign Highlights the Importance of Babitonga Bay Port Complex

Porto Itapoá and the Port of São Francisco do Sul launched a new advertising campaign this year: “Babitonga Bay Complex—it seems complex, but it’s phenomenal.” Located between the municipalities of São Francisco do Sul, Itapoá, Joinville, Araquari, and Garuva, the Bay is 215 km from Florianópolis and about 100 km from Curitiba.

The Babitonga Bay port complex plays a crucial role in the economic development of Santa Catarina and the country. It encompasses significant terminals like Porto Itapoá, Porto de São Francisco do Sul, Transpetro, Terminal Gás Sul, and various hinterland terminals. A vital economic and natural ecosystem, Babitonga recorded a throughput of over 56 million tonnes in 2023, representing more than 60% of the market share in Santa Catarina.
