Porto Itapoá breaks cargo throughput record for the third time in 2023

Porto Itapoá has begun the latter half of 2023 on a positive note, surpassing its previous monthly throughput record with 99,396 TEUs handled. This represents a notable 10% rise compared to July 2022’s throughput of 89,880 TEUs. This milestone has been achieved twice this year, in both March and May, contributing to a commendable 18% growth over the same period last year.
The majority of activities during July were imports, constituting approximately 15% of the overall cargo traffic at the port. Porto Itapoá’s President, Cássio Schreiner, comments that “the first half of 2023 results showed a 40% increase in imports at Porto Itapoá compared to the same period in 2022”. “It demonstrates a market activity driven, above all, by the industry.”
China remains the primary source of imports that enter Brazil through Porto Itapoá, followed by Germany and the US in fourth and fifth positions, respectively. Noteworthy import categories include general machinery and components, plastics, fabrics, clothing, and footwear.
Exports accounted for just over 13% of the total throughput in July. The US led as the primary destination for the Brazilian goods, trailed by China and Saudi Arabia. Dominant export sectors included frozen and refrigerated meat, wood and wood products, as well as organic and inorganic chemical products.
See below the containerized cargo throughput, including exports and imports, recorded at the Itapoá Port from Jan 2019 and Jun 2023, according to the DataLiner service.

Transhipment operations were also significant, accounting for roughly 13% of total handled. “Transshipment is the operation in which the containers are unloaded from the ship and later loaded onto another ship with a different destination,” explains Schreiner.
Additional milestones were achieved as Porto Itapoá set a new record for Less than Container Load (LCL) cargo, encompassing cargo that shares container space. The terminal handled 40 containers representing 227 distinct orders. Moreover, the month of July witnessed the arrival of 54 ships at the terminal.
