Porto Itapoá, which is located in the Babitonga Bay, on the northern coast of Santa Catarina State/south Brazil, is celebrating yet another record for cargo handling this week. The port terminal has reached a milestone, having handled 1 million TEUs in just 10 months. The numbers in this new record are remarkable, but so is the time it took to achieve. The previous record took 12 months to achieve, which means that the port surpassed its own performance by 67 days. This shows how efficient its operations have become.
Below is an interactive chart on container exports and imports registered at Itapoá Port between January 2021 and August 2024, according to Datamar’s DataLiner data.

Sergni Pessoa Rosa Jr., the Director of Operations, Technology and Environment at Porto Itapoá, , attributed this achievement to the modern and efficient infrastructure at the Terminal. “This is the result of regular investment, which has allowed us to continuously improve our operations. For example, this Terminal now has the most container cranes in Santa Catarina. We have seven robust, technologically advanced machines, as well as the largest storage yard”, he emphasized.
This record is partly due to the completion of Phase III of the port’s expansion in the first half of 2024. As a result, Porto Itapoá increased the size of its yard to a capacity of 455 thousand m², which is the largest in Santa Catarina and one of the biggest in Brazil. The new infrastructure enables them to store 31 thousand TEUs and handle 1.8 million TEUs each year.
In addition, Phase IV is already underway, so as to meet the increasing demand, both domestically and internationally. The expansion will add a further 120,000 m² to the yard, as well as provide new high-tech machinery. This should improve the efficiency and sustainability of the terminal even further. “This expansion shows that we remain committed to providing a more efficient service with a greater logistical capacity and establishes Porto Itapoá as a real giant in the port industry”, explained Ricardo Arten, the CEO of Porto Itapoá.
The demand for greater logistics/port capacity is urgent, according to Felipe Fioravanti Kaufmann, the Director of Business Development and Customer Experience, and Porto Itapoá is helping considerably in ensuring that foreign trade becomes more fluid and efficient. “This record was a joint effort, both by Porto Itapoá and by its customers. Together, we have established a reputation for cooperation and mutual trust.”
In August this year, Porto Itapoá received the Ports + Brazil Award, issued by the Federal Government’s Ministry of Ports and Airports. The terminal came second in container movement growth and has been the fastest growing private terminal in the country for two consecutive years.
