Portonave and Mada Await Decision in Itajaí Port Lease Contention

Originally expected to take place on Tuesday (17), the National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq) decided to postpone the assessment of the bids ranked 2nd and 3rd places in the provisional lease process for the Port of Itajaí, in the northern coast of Santa Catarina, to next Friday (20). The first-place contender, MMS Empreendimentos, was disqualified.
Now, a neighbor to Port of Itajaí, Portonave, may take over the concession, competing against the company Mada Araújo Asset Management Ltda from São Paulo, the second-place contender in the process.
The Permanent Commission for Port Lease Bidding of Antaq (CPLA) is analyzing the operational conditions of the company Mada, which promised a 44,000 TEU throughput per month.
The Teconnave group, a company associated with Portonave, made a proposal for 35,000 TEUs. Therefore, the commission decided to conduct an inquiry into the Federal Attorney of Antac, as explained by Professor Agripino, a lawyer specializing in Port Law and a university professor.
“The CPLA is now determining whether all of the proposals are in accordance with the law, and they have also decided to extend the notice deadline. I believe we will have a decision by the end of the month on whether Mada can truly implement its bid or the contract should pass passes to the third company [Portonave], which so far is the only one in the industry and is the best-ranked in terms of having a proposal that is more suitable for reality, which is the proposal of 35,000 containers per month, 20-foot equivalent units,” said the professor.
According to the professor, Antaq is following the process properly, critically evaluating the technical capabilities of the proposals presented.
