Portonave posted a throughput of 419,302 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) from January to April this year, achieving an average ship productivity of 126.5 Movements Per Hour (MPH), marking a 34% increase compared to the same period last year. According to the latest data from the National Waterborne Transport Agency (ANTAQ), Portonave was the port terminal with the highest ship productivity in Brazil as of March.
Despite ongoing renovation works at the harbor, the company exceeded volume expectations, showcasing the efficiency and dedication of its teams. Over 180 ship calls were made in the first four months, with April alone accounting for 100,002 TEUs. Notably, the Hyundai Supreme performed 1,083 movements in just 7 hours, achieving a ship productivity of 152.9 MPH. In the same month, the Kota Santos vessel from PIL recorded 3,425 movements in 24 hours, with a productivity of 139.9 MPH.
The main export products during this period were wood and its derivatives (41%), frozen meat and its derivatives (35%), and paper (7%). On the import side, Portonave received plastics and derivatives (18%), textiles (10%), and machinery (10%). The top countries for imports were China, the United States, and India, while the major export destinations were China, the United States, and Mexico.
Wharf Work and Future Prospects
In January, Portonave commenced a significant modernization endeavor at its wharf valued at R$1 billion, the largest investment since the terminal’s inception. Currently, the terminal accommodates ships up to 350 meters in length. Upon completion, it will handle vessels up to 400 meters long. The project, managed by a consortium of Besix and Empresa Construtora Brasil (ECB), is being executed in two phases. Operations continue uninterrupted on one side while construction progresses on the other 450-meter section.
Cold Storage Operations
Portonave’s fully automated cold storage facility, Iceport, which is certified by the Food Safety System Certification (FSSC 22000), handled approximately 64,000 tonnes of cargo in the first four months of 2024, a 15% increase over the same period last year. Chicken and pork accounted for 57% of movements, vegetables for 33%, and beef for 8%. Notably, chicken and pork movements surged by 44%, while vegetable movements increased by 10%.
