The first quarter of 2021 ended well for the Port of Navegantes. Portonave has consolidated itself as a leader in container handling in the south of Brazil, attaining a market share of 32% according to Datamar (full long-haul containers). With 172,518 TEU handled in the period, the port registered a growth of 39.6% compared to January to March last year. The Navegantes Port Terminal alone represented 12% of the total containers that Brazil handled in the first quarter of this year, ranking second in the country.
The company’s result is in line with the recovery of the Santa Catarina market. Despite having shrunk compared to February, the state’s industrial production at the end of March had increased 36.5% in comparison with the same month in 2020. This result places Santa Catarina with the highest increase among 15 places surveyed by IBGE, using data released last week. One of the highlights is the export of wood, with a growth of 31.5%. Portonave is the leader in the country in handling wood for export. The Terminal has three lines to North America (major importers of Brazilian wood), of which 24 vessels are part. The high exchange rate has also encouraged Brazilian exports.

Asia, especially China, accounted for 52% of exports of refrigerated and frozen cargo in the first quarter of 2021. Animal protein did well, especially poultry and pork.
Historically, China is Brazil’s largest buyer: in 2020, the country received 35.21% of Brazil’s total exports. In 2019, it received 27.76%, and in 2018, 27.48%.
In imports, the Asian continent also dominated: 58% of imports that arrived in the country through Portonave in 2021 originated in Asia. The Port of Navegantes has three lines to the continent via 37 vessels.
