In an unprecedented docking operation, 272 rolling cargo units (cars and machinery) were handled on the Bosporus Highway ship at Berth 219 in the Port of Paranaguá on Tuesday (12). The new berth was explicitly constructed for roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) ships. The operation was conducted collaboratively by Portos do Paraná, pilotage services, and the Port Captaincy.
The new area is the outcome of a long-term project initiated in 2016 to expand the company managing the Paranaguá Container Terminal (TCP).
“For the expansion of the terminal, there was a need for an exclusive berth for general and rolling cargo operations. With the approval of the environmental licensing, the structure was built, dredging works were carried out by Portos do Paraná, and maneuver simulations were conducted,” explained Gabriel Vieira, Operations Director at Portos do Paraná.
Extensive communication with the local community was conducted through local media, and area signage was implemented for the docking and operation of 164 vehicles and 108 machines.
The Port of Paranaguá will handle 84,128 vehicles in 2023, with 30,573 for import and 53,555 for export. “This new operation will undoubtedly bring more berth availability, efficiency in handling, and attractiveness to port operations,” emphasized Vieira.
Using the new berth exclusively for rolling cargo is expected to benefit the Ascensus Group, the winning bidder for the PAR12 area, which has a yard for static storage of 4,000 vehicles.
