On World Environment Day (June 5), Portos do Paraná announced that it invested around R$100 million in numerous environmental and social programs along the Paraná coast from 2019 to 2023. These efforts focus on five key areas: youth support, sanitation, socio-environmental tourism and culture, strengthening artisanal fishing, and community associations.
These projects are reported directly to the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) through periodic reports and are tailored to community needs. “The relationship between Portos do Paraná and the communities is growing increasingly closer, in a more fluid and integrated nature. One of our latest environmental projects is a partnership with the Federal University of Paraná to implement sewage treatment in all homes on Eufrasina Island,” said João Paulo Santana, Director of Environment at Portos do Paraná.
This program aims to improve residents’ quality of life and preserve Paranaguá Bay by replacing rudimentary sewage treatment systems with ecological, low-cost solutions. Additionally, workshops on producing eco-friendly cleaning products will be held, and the quality of bathing water will be monitored.
Among the educational initiatives, the Environmental Education Program (PEA) stands out, encompassing 11 socio-environmental projects and introducing permaculture principles. Last year alone, 1,397 people benefited from the program.
The “Green Seal” and “Composting to Cultivate” projects also address community environmental needs. The former is a certification system for good environmental practices for regional businesses, promoting improvements in solid waste management. The latter promotes composting and agroecological gardening, having implemented residential composting and composting units in two schools on Ilha do Mel, diverting about one ton of waste per year from landfills since 2021.
Decarbonization Plan
In addition to social and environmental investments, the ports of Paraná are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Fundación Valenciaport, a global reference in this field, is conducting a diagnostic study and will develop the Decarbonization Plan for Portos do Paraná.
The public company is a signatory of the Brazilian Alliance for Port Decarbonization and aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The partnership with the Spanish research and innovation center began in 2020 with a technical cooperation agreement.
Portos do Paraná’s SDGs
Portos do Paraná has also embraced the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which address major global development challenges through 17 objectives.
