In the first half of 2024, PortosRio achieved a significant increase in cargo throughput, totaling 36.7 million tonnes. This volume represents a 23% growth compared to the same period in 2023. The positive results are attributed to the performance of the Ports of Itaguaí and Rio de Janeiro, which saw growth rates of 22% and 28.4%, respectively.
The Port of Itaguaí handled 30 million tonnes between January and June this year, with iron ore being the standout, reaching 27 million tonnes—a 22.5% increase over the same period in 2023. The port now holds a 14.5% share of the national iron ore throughput, solidifying its position as the third-largest port facility for handling this commodity, Brazil’s main export cargo.
The Port of Rio de Janeiro had a 6.7 million tonnes throughput, with containerized cargo being the highlight, at some 5 million tonnes—a 53.9% increase compared to the first half of 2023. Container throughput at the port reached a record 430,089 TEUs, a 64.9% rise over the same period last year.
The chart below relies on DataLiner, Datamar’s pioneer maritime intelligence service, to show the hike in container exports at the Port of Rio de Janeiro between January 2021 and June 2024.

Nationally, the cargo throughput on record for PortosRio in the first half of 2024 accounts for 15.8% of the total handled at Brazil’s public ports and 5.7% of the entire waterway sector, including private terminals.
These figures come from the Waterway Statistics report by the National Agency for Waterway Transportation (ANTAQ), released on August 11. ANTAQ’s Statistical Panel, which offers detailed data on long-haul transportation, cabotage, inland waterways, and port throughput, is available for consultation on the agency’s website.
