Week 202420

PortosRio, the public entity overseeing the ports of Rio de Janeiro, Itaguaí, Niterói, and Angra dos Reis, reported a significant increase in cargo throughput in the first quarter of 2024. The total volume reached 16.1 million tonnes, marking a 24.4% rise, or an additional 3.1 million tonnes, compared to the same period in 2023.

Itaguaí’s Iron Ore Boost

The primary driver of this growth was the Port of Itaguaí, where iron ore throughput exceeded 11.6 million tonnes. This figure represents a 26.9% increase, or an additional 2.4 million tonnes, in iron ore exports compared to the first quarter of the previous year.

Containerized Cargo Surge in Rio de Janeiro

The Port of Rio de Janeiro also played a crucial role in the company’s robust performance, handling approximately 2 million tonnes of containerized cargo during the same period. This represents a substantial 36.1% increase over the volume recorded from January to March 2023.
