Expanding rail connections is another key factor for boosting the competitiveness of the Babitonga Bay port complex, which includes the ports of São Francisco do Sul and Itapoá. The terminals in São Francisco currently have rail access connecting them to Mafra, which then links them to other areas, such as Paraná. Efforts are underway to establish connections to Itapoá and the port complex of Itajaí and Navegantes, with initiatives advancing on both fronts.

By February, a 62-kilometer railway between Navegantes and Araquari is expected to be completed. The proposed rail line could connect to the federal network at Araquari, where it crosses the EF-485, the railroad that provides access to São Francisco do Sul, thus connecting two port hubs via rail. However, the funding sources and partnership models with the corporate sector for this $300 million venture (equivalent to R$ 1.6 billion) have yet to be determined.
The state government is in the early stages of requesting financial assistance.

Another proposed rail line aims to connect EF-485 to Itapoá, originating from a point between Joinville and Jaraguá do Sul. The state government has received a request to draft plans for this line and is currently evaluating the proposal. Porto Itapoá is conducting its own studies on the project, which will be reviewed by public authorities. If these planned train tracks are built, the Babitonga complex ports will be connected by rail to other key ports.
