Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, announced on Wednesday (19) that the government will unveil its first waterway concession next week, projected to attract R$5 billion in investments. The concession will cover the Madeira Waterway, connecting the states of Rondônia and Amazonas.

The minister emphasized that the port sector is expected to receive R$10 billion in investments in 2024, a significant increase from the R$450 million in public investments the sector received in 2022.

Speaking at a ceremony hosted by the National Transport Confederation (CNT), Costa Filho also noted that the aviation sector is set to receive R$10 billion in investments over the next five years. “Despite all the difficulties and political disputes, we are witnessing Brazil’s progress towards development and economic growth,” the minister stated.

Costa Filho highlighted the reduction in the country’s unemployment rate since President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office. At the beginning of Lula’s administration, the unemployment rate was 9%, which has since decreased to 7.5%, the lowest rate since 2014. He also mentioned that Brazil now has over 100 million formally employed workers.
