Portos do Paraná has finalized replacing the nautical signal buoys in Canal do Surdinho, the alternative access to the Port of Paranaguá. There are four new, articulated, and more modern equipment. The public company’s investment is R$2.8 million, which includes purchasing buoys, materials, and implementation of the entire project, which also involves the main channel.

In all, there will be nine pieces of equipment deployed and another nine for spare use. With the underwater rockfall at Pedra das Palanganas, conventional buoys will be replaced by articulated ones in the region of Canal da Galheta.

The replacement of conventional buoys increases safety along the stretch, which will play a fundamental role during the dredging works in the main access to the ports of Paraná. The new equipment has greater precision in position and acts as a lighthouse, serving as support for navigators to visually locate themselves.

“The equipment is positioned on the bank of the channel, which increases the area for the passage of ships. They reduce the uncertainty in the positioning of the buoys by more than 30 meters, delimiting the margins of the channel with greater precision”, explains Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Portos do Paraná.

They provide greater safety for the environment as well, as the new buoys define the limits of navigation more precisely and have greater visibility and geographic reach. With this, the risks of strandings and accidents are minimized.

Articulated buoys are more resistant, with better positioning accuracy, greater signal visibility (due to greater height), greater geographic reach, and lower maintenance costs.

Surdinho – The alternative channel to the Port of Paranaguá was dredged in the last deepening campaign and today has a draft of 12.5 meters. The Hydrographic Survey, carried out by the Brazilian Navy, with authorization nº 13/2020, was analyzed and used to prepare the project to change the navigation aid.
