Paraná ports have achieved yet another record this month. With 5,968,934 tonnes, cargo throughput in March grew by 11% compared to the same month last year (5,357,799 tonnes). This figure marks the eighth consecutive monthly record set by the public company Portos do Paraná.
“In addition to the streak of 8 record-breaking months, numbers reveal a considerable growth in 2024. In the year’s first quarter, we saw a 16% increase compared to last year. That’s over 16 million tonnes of cargo this year alone,” highlighted Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Portos do Paraná. So far, 16,384,054 tonnes have been handled in 2024, which is 2,274,055 more than in 2023.
In March, soybeans and sugar dominated the cargo throughput, with substantial volume increases. Soybean shipments totaled 1,525,907 tons, marking a 27% surge compared to the same month last year when it stood at 1,204,720 tons. Meanwhile, bulk sugar saw a spike in demand, skyrocketing from 93,000 tons in 2023 to 419,899 tons in 2024, a staggering 352% increase. Additionally, bagged sugar experienced robust growth, soaring from 18,054 tons last year to 70,220 tons this year, representing a remarkable 289% surge.
“Soybean and sugar commodities drove exports not only in March, which was the best month of the year so far, but also in the first quarter of 2024. On the import side, fertilizer was the most handled cargo both in the month and in the first quarter of this year,” emphasized Gabriel Vieira, Operations Director of Portos do Paraná.
Fertilizer imports increased from 755,763 tons in 2023 to 888,506 tons in 2024, representing an 18% growth. The Port of Paranaguá remains the main gateway for this commodity in Brazil, accounting for 26% of the national cargo throughput during this period, according to the Brazilian foreign trade data query system (Comex Stat).
