Increased railway cargo at Ports of Paraná

The number of railway wagons and the volume of cargo transported by rail to or from the Port of Paranaguá increased in the first half. This year, 98,989 wagons passed through the Paraná terminal and transported around 5.5 million tons.
In 2020, in the same period, there were 8,565 cars less and 4.9 million tons handled.
The railroad’s share also increased: From January to June 2021, 18.9% of cargo arrived or left the terminals in railway wagons. Last year, this percentage was 14.7%.
Bulk sugar holds the largest share of the modal to unload at the Port of Paranaguá, at 74%. In the first half of this year alone, there were 1,628,055 tons of sugar in railway wagons. In 2020, there were 1,157,903 tons.
2,224,611 tons of soybean grains were also unloaded from wagons, equivalent to 29% of the total handled by the Port of Paranaguá in the first half. In the same six months of 2020, there were 2,204,925 tons (25% of the total).
In 2021, 564,169 tons of soybean meal arrived by rail in the first half (21%). Last year, 553,241 tons (19% of the total) were unloaded.
In terms of imports, the use of the railroad to transport fertilizers towards the interior also increased. In the first half of 2020, 52,658 tons (1%) were loaded in wagons. In 2021, 127,513 (2% of the total) were loaded.
