The ports of the Northern Arc — encompassing the ports in the North and Northeast regions above the 16°S parallel — were responsible for 39% of all corn and soybean exports from Brazil between January and October 2024. This volume amounts to 47.7 million tons, according to the Aquatic Statistical Bulletin of the National Agency for Waterway Transportation (ANTAQ), which tracks monthly port activity in the country.

According to Flávio Acatauassú, CEO of the Association of Port Terminals and Cargo Transshipment Stations of the Amazon Basin (AMPORT), the performance is even more remarkable given the severe drought conditions the region has faced in recent months. “We are resilient and prepared to grow even more, even after a historic drought that we experienced in the second half of 2024,” he stated.

Investments and Sustainability Drive Growth

The executive attributes the export increase through the Northern Arc to years of significant investment in infrastructure, sustainability, and advanced technologies. “The ports of the Northern Arc have shown consistent growth over the past decade. Our region has a natural vocation, with extensive navigable rivers, and we have been investing heavily to improve our services. We are competitive in logistics and provide cost-effective and viable solutions for our clients while prioritizing sustainability and environmental responsibility,” Acatauassú emphasized.

Pará and Amazonas Lead the Way

The states of Pará and Amazonas stood out in regional export activities. According to ANTAQ’s data, 59.4% of the corn and soybean exports handled by the Northern Arc between January and October were transported through Amazonian ports, including those in Pará and Amazonas. Specifically for corn, an impressive 80% of all Northern Arc exports originated from the ports in these two states.

Here are the top ten Brazilian ports that exported the most corn in terms of volume. The data comes from DataLiner –  a Datamar trade intelligence product.

“These figures make us proud and even more motivated to continue working toward the growth of the sector in the Northern Arc. We have an installed capacity of 52 million tons, and ongoing investments are needed to increase this capacity by another 48 million tons of bulk cargo. This means we will have a total capacity of approximately 100 million tons of grains over the next five years. We are prepared to meet the growing demand and are continuously modernizing to ensure competitive growth,” Acatauassú concluded.
