Cargo freight via inland navigation should have a very positive year-long annual performance. This is what Brazil’s National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq) latest statistical report shows.
According to October and November data, inland navigation in the Amazon and Tocantins-Araguaia hydrographic regions (responsible for 75% of cargo movement by inland navigation in the country) grew by 30% and 25.3%, respectively.
The total of the two regions represents 5,084 million tonnes of cargo. In addition, the South Atlantic, Paraguay, and Paraná waterways (which complete Brazil’s hydrographic regions) transported 1,702,736 million tonnes.
Monthly data
The most significant growth took place in October when all hydrographic regions recorded an increase in inland navigation. Again, the Amazon and Tocantins-Araguaia regions were highlights, with a movement growth of 47.7% and 53.9%, respectively.
The terminal that stood out the most was Hidrovias do Brasil’s Mirituba Terminal – responsible for 35.7% of all hydrographic movement in Brazil – an increase of 167.23%.
In November, there was a slight drop in the Amazon hydrographic region (down 1.1%), while Tocantins-Araguaia maintained a positive balance of 20.1%.
