The 2023 Environmental Development Index (IDA), released by the National Waterway Transport Agency (Antaq), presented results that reaffirm the environmental commitment of Private Use Terminals (TUPs) in Brazil. One of the highlights was the exceptional performance of TUPs focused on container and mineral bulk handling, which led the scores across all categories, surprising with significant environmental progress.
With an average score of 84.5 points, container TUPs registered a 1.1% growth compared to the previous year, reaffirming their environmental efficiency. A major standout was the Port of Itapoá in Santa Catarina, which achieved an impressive score of 98.33. Another exemplary case was the Port of Chibatão in Manaus (AM), which saw an impressive 20.45% increase in its IDA score, demonstrating a continuous effort to improve its environmental practices. The information comes from a technical report by the Research and Development Coordination of the Private Port Terminals Association (ATP).
The mineral bulk terminals also performed well, with an average of 79.45 points and a 0.9% growth. The Ferroport Iron Ore Terminal in North Fluminense stood out as the highest-rated in the category, scoring 99.79 points, closely followed by the Tubarão Terminal (ES), which reached 99.25 points. Both terminals ranked 2nd and 3rd in the overall TUP ranking, just behind the TMUL/TCAR terminal at the Port of Açu (RJ), which achieved an impressive 99.88 points.
According to ATP’s survey, among the ore terminals with the highest percentage growth, the Port Sudeste in Itaguaí (RJ) stood out, recording a 15.6% increase, moving from the 19th to the 9th position overall.
The overall average score for TUPs in the IDA was 57.04 points, while the terminals affiliated with the Private Port Terminals Association (ATP) had an average of 68.7 points, 20.4% higher than the overall average.
“The results of IDA 2023 highlight the importance of the environmental agenda for private terminals. The performance of TUPs focused on containers and ore serves as an example of how it is possible to align operational efficiency with sustainability, indicating a promising path for the future,” said Gabriela Costa, Executive Director of ATP.
Established through Antaq Resolution No. 2.650/2012, the IDA is a tool for monitoring and controlling environmental management at port facilities. According to the regulatory agency, the index helps quantify and simplify information, making it easier for the public and decision-makers to understand port environmental issues.
Antaq highlights that the IDA evaluates indicators such as the status of environmental licensing, the composition of the environmental management team, risk prevention and emergency response, environmental auditing, waste management, energy efficiency, environmental quality monitoring, and health contingency plans.
