The federal program Pro Trilhos, which was launched in September 2021 to allow private ventures to expand the national rail network, will commence in 2022 with the signing of 21 newly signed contracts for the building and operation of railroads. The Brazilian Federal Gazette covered the formal agreement between the government and these companies.
Together, these projects will add 6,839.69 kilometers of new tracks to the country’s railroad network, especially in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Maranhão, Bahia, Pernambuco, Piauí, Mato Grosso do South, Mato Grosso and Goiás, as well as the Federal District. Investments in the sanctioned areas are expected to total R$ 102.3 billion.
As of right now, there are twelve companies authorized by the Federal Government to operate in the sector, building and managing with their own resources the railroad and railway terminals in thirteen different states.
