The economic performance of the artificial insemination industry in Brazil during the first quarter of the year was the topic of a recent report released on Friday, the 14th. Bovine semen exports grew by 49%, and production rose by 10% compared to the same period in 2023, according to the ASBIA Index, compiled by the Center for Studies in Applied Economics at the University of São Paulo (Cepea/USP) for the Brazilian Association of Artificial Insemination (Asbia).
“In terms of foreign sales, we jumped from 133,817 doses shipped in the first quarter of last year to 199,631 doses this year. Semen collection increased from 4,251,208 doses to 4,718,235 doses,” said Cristiano Botelho, an executive at Asbia, in a statement.
The report also noted a 9% decrease in imported semen doses, dropping from 949,718 to 866,318 during the period. Considering both imported and collected doses, the Brazilian market grew by 6.7%. “With more doses circulating in the national market, improved genetics are being integrated into rural properties,” Botelho highlighted.
Sales to end customers, intended for rural producers to use in reproduction and genetic improvement of their herds, decreased by 9%, from 3,847,469 doses in the first quarter of 2023 to 3,507,389 this year.
“The production of semen doses suitable for milk production is the second highest in the last six years for the first quarter. The Asbia Index also indicates significant growth in doses for beef production, surpassing the levels of the past six years,” Botelho added.
Botelho also emphasized the strength of genetics aimed at dairy farming at the beginning of the year. “It is the most consistent start since 2018, whether in doses delivered under service contracts or doses sold to end customers. Just like beef cattle farmers, Brazilian milk producers are heavily investing in bovine genetics. This will undoubtedly result in significant zootechnical improvements in the near future, especially in productivity,” Botelho concluded.
