Progress Made on Access Highway to Lake Itaipu in Paraguay
Feb, 29, 2024 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202409
After decades of waiting and promises made by at least four presidents, the paving of the highway leading to Puerto Indio, on the shores of Lake Itaipu, is finally underway in Paraguay.
The project involves 60 kilometers of single-lane roads, connecting the Supercarretera de Itaipu (PY07 Highway) to the port terminal where ferries depart for the International Port of Santa Helena on the Brazilian side of the border.
The Paraguayan government divided the work into two lots. From kilometers 0 to 27, the responsibility lies with the company Benito Roggio e Hijos S.A. From kilometer 27 onward, the contractor is the construction company LT S.A.
According to Paraguay’s Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), the current stage involves earthworks along the stretch, including pole repositioning, route realignment, and the installation of the first layers of asphalt.
The deadline for completing the work is 30 months, with the expectation of delivering it to the community by the end of the first half of 2026. The contract with the companies also includes maintenance of the highway for five years.
