Public ports handle 43.22 million tons of cargo and show growth in July 2024

Public ports saw a 6.02% increase in cargo handling in July this year, reaching 43.22 million tonnes, according to data from the National Agency for Waterway Transportation (ANTAQ).
Total port traffic for the month was 118.96 million tons of cargo, a 1.38% increase compared to the same period last year. For the year to date, the increase in cargo handling was 3.96% (764.7 million tonnes) compared to the first seven months of 2023.
In July, the cargo types with the highest percentage growth in total port traffic were wheat (+59.75%), sugar (+22.18%), and fertilizers (+18.55%).
Cargo
For containerized cargo, July’s handling reached 13.34 million tonnes, a 17.98% increase compared to the same period last year, representing 1.2 million TEUs. Of this total, 9.04 million tonnes were handled in long-haul operations and 4.16 million tonnes via cabotage.

Solid bulk cargoes grew by 1.6% compared to July 2023, with 73.45 million tonnes recorded in the seventh month of the year. General cargo also saw growth in July, with an 11.74% increase, totaling 5.2 million tonnes. Conversely, liquid bulk cargoes amounted to 26.96 million tonnes, a decrease of 7.29%.
Navigation
Port support services had the highest growth in July compared to the same month in 2023. There were 0.16 million tonnes of cargo handled, representing a 9.81% increase.
Long-haul cargo handling was 85.51 million tonnes in the seventh month of 2024, showing a 3.21% increase compared to the same period last year.
Cabotage experienced a 1.71% decline compared to the same period last year, with 25.29 million tonnes handled. Inland navigation cargo operations saw a 6.33% decrease, totaling 7.92 million tonnes.
Public Ports
Among the 10 busiest public ports in the country, the port with the highest growth in July was the Port of Rio Grande (RS), with a 34.01% increase compared to July 2023, reaching 2.74 million tonnes.
This was followed by the Port of Suape (PE) with an 18.76% increase (2.28 million tonnes) and the Port of Itaguaí (RJ) with a 14.1% increase (6.02 million tonnes).
Private Terminals
In authorized terminals, there was a 1.09% decrease in traffic compared to July last year. The sector handled 75.74 million tonnes of cargo.
Among the 20 TUPs (private terminals) with the highest traffic in July, the private terminal with the most significant growth compared to 2023 was the Terminal Integrador Portuário Luiz Antonio Mesquita (TIPLAM) in São Paulo, with a 26.84% increase. A total of 1.37 million tonnes of cargo were handled at the terminal in the seventh month of the year.
