Russia announced on Thursday (10) an export ban on a series of products and equipment in retaliation for Western sanctions imposed on the country over the invasion of Ukraine.
The measure covers more than 200 goods previously exported abroad, such as “medical, technological and communication equipment, vehicles, agricultural machinery, and electrical materials,” according to Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.
“This measure is necessary to guarantee the stability of the Russian market,” says the decree’s text, which provides exceptions for the Eurasian Economic Union, an association led by Moscow that brings together former Soviet republics, as well as the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Georgia.
Furthermore, the government has prohibited exporting “some types of wood” to countries that have engaged in “hostile actions” against Russia, including the United States and European Union members.
The Kremlin has also threatened to cut off natural gas supplies to Europe but has yet to take any action in this regard.
