The volume of goods arriving and leaving the ports of Paraná by rail increased by 6.4% in the first four months of the year compared to the same period in 2021. Approximately 3,112,320 tonnes of 18,695,084 were transported by rail in and out of these ports. Although rail transportation in Paraná remained at 16% in both years, the volume increased: from January to April 2021, 2,924,813 tonnes out of 18,286,534 were transported on train tracks.
The products with the most significant participation in the use of the modal were corn, soybeans, fertilizers, oil derivatives, and containers. “We receive corn, soybeans, brans, some containerized cargo – such as poultry – and sugar on trains. These products are mainly exported,” says Luiz Teixeira da Silva Júnior, director of operations.
According to him, in terms of imports, the products that tend to leave the port in wagons are mostly fertilizers, containerized cargo, and oil derivatives.
In the first four months of last year, 7% of the volume of corn exported by the Port of Paranaguá arrived in wagons. In 2022, this figure rose to 11%. For soybeans, it went from 28% to 29%. As for fertilizers heading inwards, the share went from 2% to 5%. “The increase in the transport of petroleum products and containers in wagons caught even more attention,” comments Teixeira.
In oil, it went from zero to 12% rail transportation from January to April YoY.
In terms of containers, rail handled 13% of the total volume in the period (3,771,363 tonnes) in the first four months of the year. They accounted for 8% of the total of 3,680,683 tonnes last year.
“We have projects to increase the use of rail transportation in the ports of Paraná,” mentions the director of operations. “For example, with Klabin installing itself at the terminal, they will bring the train track along with them.”
The state government is also investing in the transport modal with the Nova Ferroeste track and the mill hopper project at the West Wharf known as Moegão, currently up to bid.
