Reactivation of Barra Mansa – Angra railroad could boost agribusiness exports in Sul de Minas

The reactivation of the 105-kilometer stretch of railroad between Barra Mansa (RJ) and Angra dos Reis (RJ) operated by the concessionary company VLI can directly benefit exports from the agribusiness hub of Sul de Minas. The hub is one of the largest in the country and is responsible for exporting 30% of Brazilian coffee, in addition to soy, corn, and other commodities.
Currently, Porto Seco Sul de Minas, in Varginha (MG), handles around 200,000 containers (or the equivalent) per year in import and export cargo by road transport at an average unit cost of R$ 3400. With the railroad to Angra, the cost of transport would be less than R$ 2000 per container (or the equivalent) of cargo, which would generate significant savings for producers in the southern region of MG. In addition to reducing the logistical cost, the reactivation of the railway stretch between Barra Mansa and Angra would contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions and mobility, in addition to helping to relieve other ports in the Southeast, such as Santos. It is estimated that around 50,000 truck trips will be eliminated per year.
The number of containers that pass through Varginha annually could also double with the reactivation of the line, improving the logistics of importing other cargoes to the triangle between Mineiro and Goiás via the Port of Angra, such as fertilizers, agricultural equipment, and machinery. TPAR is able to move around 40,000 containers a year at first, but the capacity could reach 100,000.
The railroad’s arrival in Angra would also benefit the Sul Fluminense Automotive Cluster, which brings together six automakers and more than 100 suppliers of automotive production.
VLI, the concessionaire of Ferrovia Centro Atlântica (FCA), has already committed to re-establishing the railway section between Varginha and Barra Mansa. But without reactivating the route to Angra, the cargo arriving in the municipality of Vale do Paraíba will need to be transported by Via Dutra or exchanged for wagons from other railways, increasing the logistical cost.
