Record October Sales and Rebound in Exports Keep Brazil’s Vehicle Production Strong
Nov, 06, 2024October marked a vehicle sales milestone not seen in Brazil since December 2014. A total of 264,900 vehicles were registered, surpassing December 2019’s volume, the highest in nearly a decade. The month saw robust domestic demand, with sales up 12.1% from September and 21.6% from October last year. The daily sales average hit 11,500 units, the highest in 2024. Globally, Brazil ranked fifth in vehicle registrations for October, even surpassing Germany.
Production reached 249,200 units last month, an increase of 8.3% from September and 24.7% compared to October 2023. “While this was the second-best production month seen this year, we’re still behind in registrations due to high import volumes. Year-to-date, sales are up 15%, while production rose by 8.9%,” said Márcio de Lima Leite, President of the National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (ANFAVEA).
Imported models also saw record sales, with 47,000 units sold in October, the highest number in the past decade. Half of these imports originated from China. Year-to-date, 369,100 foreign models have been registered, marking a 36% increase over the same period in 2023.
Although exports have yet to match import volumes, they have shown growth over the past four months. In October, 43,500 units were exported, up 39.2% from last October. Year-to-date exports reached 327,800 units across cars, light commercial vehicles, trucks, and buses—7.4% lower than the previous year.
Another positive indicator in October was the addition of 7,000 direct jobs in the last 12 months, with the automotive sector poised to generate an additional 70,000 positions throughout its supply chain.
“This is the indicator we’re most pleased about, as we hold a major responsibility for around 1.2 million workers in the automotive industry,” remarked ANFAVEA President Leite.
The briefing also highlighted record numbers from Fenatran, one of the world’s largest commercial vehicle and transport technology exhibitions, held this week at the São Paulo Expo. Over 600 companies filled the exhibition halls, drawing an estimated 40% larger crowd than the 2022 edition, potentially exceeding 80,000 visitors by Friday’s close. Transactions at the fair are also expected to rise by 15%.
The truck market has seen significant growth, with registrations up 16.8% this year (totaling 103,300) and production up 42.8%, with 117,400 units produced from January through October.
